Welcome to Chapter 3, just like Chapter 1 this Chapter set again in Auckland. Picking up where Matt left off, we decided Wellington was too windy, wet and drab, in essence, too English. However, we had made one decision; we were going to work in a city. As NZ only has two real cities on the North Island we jumped on a train back up to Auckland.
This in itself was an adventure. It takes a mind boggling 12 hours to get from Wellington to Auckland. Not because it's a particularly long way but rather because the train goes so slow. We had been told its a very scenic trip passing through national parks and with many beautiful vistas. While that's correct after 6 hours of rolling hills speckled with sheep a further 6 hours of rolling hills and sheep gets a little repetitive. To top it off our train was two hours late, now in England this would be expected. However, this train line is the only line and it only has two trains on it! One goes North one goes South, how one can be delayed we will never know!
Finally arriving in Auckland very late at night we returned to City Garden Lodge, our hostel for the first visit to Auckland, but this time we had tents in an effort to save money. Naturally, as we arrived the heavens opened. In the pitch black we endeavoured to pitch tents we had never even opened before. Suffice to say I (Tom) awoke in a pond. Withnail (Matt) did not.
Over the following week we handed out CV's galore to shops, cafes and bars. Obviously it would be rude simply to ask for a job in a bar, so we were forced to order a drink in each one we went into. Strangely we didn't get a job in a bar? Can't work out why!
In between job hunting we have had some fantastic nights at the Hostel. Many people we met in the first 2 weeks returned as well. The pictures speak for themselves. I (Tom) suffered the first war wound of the "holiday", I would love to say it was bungee jumping, zorbing, caving or kayaking or anything else remotely manly that caused it but no, I did it tripping over while running up a hill!!
I (Tom) had early success on the job hunting front and begin work at a camping shop in Auckland in 2 weeks. However, as I have two weeks to kill I will be leaving Auckland for a new destination and may even be parting company with my companion. Where to go that is the question……
