It seems we are a lot more busy here with the Carnival than I expected so I probably will not have time for many blog updates here. However at least we are having a lot of fun here partying with the rest of the city. The last two days we dedicated to the more informal street parades and parties where most of the locals celebrate the carnival but tonight and to morrow we are going for the more formal and extravagant celebrations. Tonight we go to the Sabodrome, which is the stadium-like main parade ground where the biggest and most fomas samba schools show their parades sorrounded by about 60.000 spectators. We passed some of the line up area for the parades last night and it looks like the shows will be truly magnificant. There will be 6 samba schools tonight, the 6 other top samba schools peformed yesterday. Each school will have 60-75 minutes to dazzle the audience with their 3000-5000 dancers, drummers and floats and their costumes are truly amazing.
Tomorrow night we go to the Gay Costume ball at the Scala which is probably the second most famous Carnival Ball in Rio. It is celebrated by both gay and straight people but is famous for the elaborate costumes and elegant drag queens among the guests, it is normally broad cast in television all over the Brazil, so that sounds like quite an experience as well. The last few nights we have tried to get home early around 3-4 am to get some sleep (many celebrations run til 6-7 am) but the next nights might be later so we have not been able to get up early and consequently do not have much time to see the city. It does not matter much however since almost everything shuts down during the day now and things only come alive again during the afternoon. Most days we do however manage to squeze in a short beach visit of an hour or so to hang arond Copacabana or Ipanema to relax a bit.
