Elective Journal
Hey everyone
Sorry for not entering in the journal for a while it has been pretty busy over the past week! So I will update you with what I have been up to over the last week. Thank you for putting messages on the board it is great to hear from you all and nic for some reason the message you put on the first time went to my email account not sure why but it is great that you had a good birthday I am sad that I missed it but look forward to a few drinks when I get back!!!
Anyway, this last week has been good have been in at 8am for wardrounds everyday so oncology is sounding more and more appealing (a later start!). The team are really friendly and they have been letting me clerk patients as well as do some of the ward jobs. They have asked me to present a patient at their team meeting with a complex congential heart disease which is pretty scary but all good pratise. I have started going to some of the lectures this week and the today was good they seem to have some pretty specialist teaching which is great. I have discovered there is a staff swimming pool here although think it might be a bit too cold. Another elective student arrived yesterday from Kings in the UK and she seems nice and it is good to have another elective student around as the other Aussy students are all really friendly but they graduate pretty soon so are all working pretty hard.
Picking up lots of tips from the staff - like distraction techniques such as blowing bubbles if a child is screaming whilst you are trying to examine them it seemed to work a treat! Have seem some interesting pschiatric cases this week and it has been good see some pretty complex patients which you wouldn't see so much of in general hospitals in the UK.
I went to Bronti beach and Coogie with Michelle on Wedsday which was good fun and the weather has been sunny everyway and in the 20s (its winter here so im not complaining!). The weekend was good went to Oxford street and had cocktails from a tea pot which you poured into shot glasses would have taken a photo but my coordination was lacking by this point - woke with the worst hangover I blame another set of dodgy cocktails (just like the set I had in plymouth!) Went to a birthday party on saturday which was villans and super hero themed so went as a superhero in a pink cape which was good fun! I will try and post some more photos this week.
I am looking forward to NETS next week should be good to go out to retrevals etc as well as see some of sydney by helicoper of the weather stays like this!!
Anyway I had better go
Take care and keep posting me messages as it is great to here form you all.
Lots of love, miss you all
Stef
