On our last day on Fraser Island we got up early again and hooray - the sun was shining and the sky was blue! The first good weather we've had since our first day or two in Oz.
Before breakfast I went to the payphone to try and call Ed again, and he picked up this time. It was really nice to speak to him - it was about 10pm at home so it was still our anniversary there!
We had a lovely beach drive in the sun, and on the way we saw a police car, stopped with lights flashing. I thought at first there might have been a crash, as Syd had told us about some fatal crashes which happened on the beach last year, but luckily it was just a spot check. Hannah was driving so she got breathalysed which was really funny because she was really scared! She was fine of course so we went on our way. After a bit more driving we stopped on the beach to go to Lake Wabby. I started to follow the track to the lake, thinking it would be just behind the trees, but it turned out to be a 2.5 kilometer walk! A walk of that length is fine if you know you're doing
it, but when you think your destination is just around the corner and it seems to be a never-ending path, it is a bit stressful. Imagine parking your car to pop into Tesco and then having to walk for half an hour to reach the entrance!
Luckily the walk was worth it. Lake Wabby is a the bottom of a huge sand dune, which is really steep, so the beach into the lake is uphill straight away. Behind the lake is just rainforest so the setting is beautiful. We had a swim and a sunbathe (finally) for about an hour or so, before heading back. Lia, a Finnish girl from our group was nowhere to be seen though - everybody was calling her name but she didn't appear. Syd managed to find her in a bush with a boy! She certainly works quickly. She seemed quite embarrassed when she got back to the car (after another 2.5km walk).
We then stopped at Eurong, a resort on the island, to buy some lunch. Syd had enough money left from our original food shop so we didn't have to pay any extra. We had 'meat pies' - sounds quite unappetising, but they were actually quite tasty (and probably very unhealthy).
After lunch we went back for one more swim in the crystal clear Lake Mackenzie, where we went on the first day. I drove for about half an hour on the way there - so fun. Syd said he was impressed with my driving when we got there which I was really pleased about. The lake was so much nicer in the sun! We did a human pyramid and Syd took pictures which was pretty funny. My memory card was full though so the pictures are on other peoples' cameras.
Despite how rubbish I felt on the first night, I didn't want to leave when the time came to go. The weather can make quite a difference to your mood!
We drove back to get the ferry to the mainland, and Vicky drove us back to the hostel. The first thing everybody did when we got back was shower - it felt so nice to be clean again. We chilled out for a bit and I read my Kindle (I'm reading Dorian Gray). I had the leftover spaghetti from the trip for dinner with a jar of sauce and some mushrooms I bought from next door.
I went online for a bit to book us somewhere to stay in Noosa, and then used my phonecard to call my mum at work - it is only one cent a minute to call UK landlines which is good.
Our whole group (12 of us) and Syd were all having a drink in the bar so I went to join them, not planning to stay for long. In the end, Hannah, Vicky, me, two Dutch guys called Dave and Gert, and Sam (one of the people who we've been with since Cairns) ending up staying out until 3.30am! The barman put enough credit for 45 songs on the jukebox, so Vicky and I made a playlist which went on until nearly 1am. By the end it was just the five of us in the bar, dancing a lot! When the playlist finished we still wanted to dance, so we went down the road to a local nightclub. Unfortunately Syd was absolutely wasted and came to the club with us - it would normally be fun but he was so drunk and a bit creepy (he is at least mid fifties) so it has kind of tainted my memory of him of a funny tour guide. The DJ was English and the music was really good - when the lights came on at 3am I still wanted to keep dancing. It was such a good night - the best ones are always the ones you don't plan!
When I got into bed I went to read a couple of pages of my book on my Kindle, but half the screen was black. It
looks like the kind of thing that would happen if you stood on it or something, but it had just been sitting on my bed so I'm not sure what happened to it. I can't read books anymore :(
Other than that though - a great day!
