I did a bungy jump today!!!
Before I left I said I'd never do one so I am quite proud of myself for doing it. I would have liked to skydive but it costs a lot more than bungy jumping (I suppose you need to pay for a plane and a parachute as opposed to a piece of elastic), so I decided I should pluck up the courage to do something 'extreme' whilst I'm in New Zealand.
We got up really early to get to the bungy place. Vicky and I were the only ones jumping out of us four. I was shaking as I signed the disclaimer and got weighed (to determine the cord length). Because I got weighed in a strappy top, I had to jump in it, but as we were queuing on the platform it was absolutely freezing cold - it even sleeted for a bit. I was shaking uncontrollably, probably a mixture of being freezing and nervous.
Once I was all strapped up and the guys had checked and double checked the harness, I had to waddle to the edge (your ankles are tied together), and lean forward. Surprisingly, I didn't hesitate at all and before I knew it I was hurtling towards the water. I managed to touch the water, in fact my arms went in and the top of my head just about touched it. Luckily the water was really warm because of the thermal activity. After a few more bounces I had to grab a pole and be lowered into a little dinghy and taken ashore. I then stayed at the bottom to watch Vicky, who was dunked up to her calves, before we walked back up the cliff to the top. I am so glad I went for it!
After the bungy we wanted to go and see the Huka Falls, but the place we parked up at was a 50 minute walk from the falls and we couldn't really be bothered, so we went to the Hot Springs Spa instead. It was $20 to get in but we managed to get in for $12 on an under 17 student ticket.
The pools were soooo warm, it was literally paradise after being so cold waiting for the bungy! The mineral water is supposed to be really good for your skin too. After a couple of hours in the pools we got out and had some lunch, before heading to the town, where we bought three DVDs for $10 (My Best Friend's Wedding, Breaking & Entering and Sense & Sensibility). We originally parked up by the side of Lake Taupo, but it was really busy so we moved a few km up the road to a free camping area.
I cooked us some egg fried rice for dinner, and then we settled down to watch a film, only to discover we didn't have the DVDs! I Googled DVD shops in Taupo (handy 3G) and luckily we found it - it was called Video Rentals or something, the owner should probably update the name. We called up and luckily he was still open, and he did indeed have the DVDs which we left on the counter.
I jumped in the front and drove us into town in my pyjamas, and fifteen minutes later we were back at the campsite watching our film - so glad we got them back!
Time for bed now and then a 5 hour drive to Wellington tomorrow!
