We had a great day today and quite unexpected. Pippy has been wanting to visit a school of the air so about 7am this morning we googled it and found there was one in Port Hedland. About 7.10, Geoff called the phone number and the principal answered. After a chat he said to come in about 9 this morning. Michael was very welcoming and spent an hour with us showing us around. There was a music lesson happening so we listened to some kids playing the recorder who were on stations 8 hours away. Our kids spoke to the kids and told them where we were from and what class they were in. The school is very well resourced and staffed and it seems the kids get a great education and go on some fantastic camps. Some of the kids on the stations have governesses that supervise the lessons at their end, but for others it is the mums who do it - as well as all the usual cooking, cleaning etc etc. Whilst at the school of the air they asked if we would like to look around the Royal Flying Doctor facility which was next door. They don't normally show tourists around but they had some special visitors so they let us tag along. It was very informative and we got to see inside the planes.
On our way out the principal, Michael asked if we would like to stop in at one of the stations on our travels and meet some of the kids. So he arranged it for this afternoon. We drove about 2 hours south of Port Hedland to Pyramid Station. They have 2 girls 10 and 9 who were very welcoming. Their mum Catherine and dad Glenn are managers on the station that is a million acres in size and runs cattle. Glenn took us out to see some of their animals including a crazy donkey and a 2 day old calf. Glenn was a real character and reminded us of Crocodile Dundee! Our kids went for a pony ride on one of the girls horses and all up we had a fantastic day. Hopefully they will come to Sydney one day and we can repay the favour.
We left the station as the sun was going down and the countryside looked just amazing in the early evening light.
We drove a further hour or so back to the coast and are staying tonight in a coastal town called Point Samson.
