Somewhere along the way from Noosa to Byron Bay via Brisbane, we crossed the border into New South Wales and it took a little while for us to realise they are an extra hour ahead of Queensland... thanks for the heads up coach driver!
We spent the first day chilling out in the town and found some nice cheap (for Australia) shops. The hostel (Nomads Byron Bay) is one of the best we've stayed in. The rooms are clean, comfy and not crammed and their is a large kitchen, communal area and two jacuzzis to socialise in.
That night we bumped into Katy, Nicolas and Theresa, half of the group we met on Fraser Island. We went out as a group and danced the night away at a local bar where a live band was playing.
On Saturday, we took a day tour to Nimbin, hippie capital of Australia. Our bus driver seemed a very groovy guy and reminded us of an old-school radio disc jockey. Anyway, the trip was interesting and the soundtrack on the bus was cool so we enjoyed it all, especially the free BBQ!
We got on really well with everyone in our room, meeting a guy who was in the Aussie navy, his friend, a martial arts expert and a nice Irish couple. That night, we met Malin and Mattias at our hostel and went out to celebrate the Irish girl's birthday (wow they can drink!). After paying $10 each to get in we didn't want to pay for any drinks so called it an early night and went to bed. Before leaving, some guy tried to pull Pip (the second guy in Byron with that intention). I found it very funny watching her squirm each time! The first was an unfortunate looking bloke and the second was, soon after, escorted from the premises for being too drunk (well that'll explain him going for Pip!).
