Day 80 feb 15th
A little unsure of how I'm feeling i crawl through the mosquito net opening and open the shutter window allowing us to enjoy a gentle sea breeze and a jaw dropping view of a perfectly pristine beach from the comfort of our bed... We lie there for hours contemplating getting up, but this island has such a relaxed feeling to it, combined with the somewhat hypnotic sound of the waves breaking that we are compelled to stay put... It's a far cry from the noise of Ko Phi Phi and we're happy to be hearing it....
It's 10.30 by the time we finally emerge and wonder off to the breakfast area and from here we hardly move from the spot till midday...
There are some really nice people staying in other bungalows within this complex, and we spend the morning just chatting with a few of them whilst the hours slip by.... Before long though, Shiree's "light" breakfast of fruit and muesli has gone and we head off into town for a walk, and to find somewhere to eat lunch.... The island is beautiful, and you could stop every 100 meters to spend 20 mins just admitting the view....
In the full light of day we can see things we walked right past last night without spotting....
We have to cross a bridge on our way into town that spans the mouth of a river with the sea to our right and the river to our left... The water is shallow under the bridge and you can clearly see the sand base and fish beneath, if it were not for the sea waves coming in you could walk through the water with ease... The bridge is narrow and around 100 meters long and is high enough for traditional long tail boats to pass under... There's a large mangrove forest growing in the waters behind the bridge ( river side ) and the closer trees are used to tie the boats too...
On our side of the bridge is a very prestigious looking company offering the wealthy beautifully crafted stilted bungalows that are positioned within the river and mangrove area, many completely surrounded by water with only a foot bridge to link them back to sold ground.. They cost a reported 9000bt a night and I'm sure it's quite an experience....
It's another very hot day so we waist no more time looking around and locate a restaurant that was busy last night to have lunch in today....
Massaman curry or Phad Thai has become my food of choice in Asia and today's choice is Phad Thai...
You never quite know what your going to get when you order Phad Thai.... The ingredients are always the same, but how things are cooked, or it's presentation vary hugely and today's is a prime example... Phad Thai has egg within it, but today the other of the ingredients that make up the Phad Thai dish come wrapped within a thin egg omelet whereas normally there's no omelette at all and the eggs within the dish.... However it arrives though, it's always nice.....
Once we've finished we call in at a little corner shop on our way back to the tree house and I buy some bottled water... I'm not one for cold showers so I'll be leaving these out in the sun for the remainder of the day to warm up, much to the amusement and ridicule of the other bungalow occupants... But I'll be the one laughing tonight when I'm showering in hot water....
We spent around half an hour back at base before heading off for a beach walk heading away from town... The tides recently gone out exposing a wide ribbon of footprint free sand which we wonder looking for recently washed up shells... Shiree writes a message in the sand and posses for a photo... The message includes a date, which we later figure out is not today's date as intended, but we were on this beach on the date written in the sand.... It's easy to loose track of time when travelling, and I've not had any idea of date or day for a long time.... smooth drift wood litters the beach edge where is joins the forest beyond... We walk for 15 mins before coming to the end of the sandy beach area... To continue walking requires you to walk along the top of a three foot wide man made stone wall that we assume has been built as a sea defence or a path to another beach.. To join the wall it's necessary to navigate your way through a naturally rocky area to gain access. The wall has the sea on one side and a shallow pool of sea water on the other with a little contained beach area... We successfully negotiate the slippery rocks and start the walk along the wall... It's maybe 200 meters long and we are sharing it with many carbs... They all clear td top of the wall as you approach, scurrying off over the side whilst you pass.. The stones are hot from the suns heat so littles pools of water within the natural stone surface offer relief to overheated feet.... The wall ends with a sharp turn and another area of rocks that appear to spend much of there time under water, we were expecting the path to continue or lead to another beach but the cliff that now faces us is impassable so we've no choice but to return along the wall top and disturb all the carbs again that have now retaken there position upon the top of the wall...
Once back on the beach again we take a few photos of beach perfection and head back to the bungalows... We learn later in our stay that the wall we walked along was never intended to lead anywhere... It's creation was to catch fish as at high tide the wall is under water but it's no longer used....
We spend the rest of the day lounging around the bungalow complex sunbathing.... I spend most if my time within the same bamboo hammock that I almost fell asleep in on the first night simply catching up wit blogs and Shiree finds a sun bed and catches a few rays....
We have decided to eat in town tonight, but upon our arrival we find that many if the restaurants are closed... The wind has picked up, and apparently this usually results in the restaurants not opening..... I guess is less people venture out.... We do eventually find a beach fronted restaurant that's open and order our dinner.... The place is quite busy so we have to wait an hour or so for our food, but it's fine.... We are not in a hurry, and this place has put up wind brakes so we are protected from the weather...
We enjoy another Massaman curry before heading off to a somewhat windy nights sleep....
