Day 15
Today's going to be a easy day and after the last two days its a well needed rest..
We get up late and decide to explore on foot... Chaing Mai is the old capital of the north.... In the past It was a square moated city with a think inner defensive wall... Now " old Chaing Mai " sites in the middle of the much larger, more modern, current day Chaing Mai, the moats are still there, but a busy road network neighbours both sides and only random sections of the 5 foot think, brick defensive wall remain... It's the old city we are looking for today and after a 30 mins of hesitant map reading from a free hotel map we find a corner of the old city... successfully negotiate a barrage of irrationally driven vehicles that seem to appear out of nowhere and intent on using the very piece of tarmac your stood on, and enter the old city.... There are many more decorated temples here than outside the walls, all decorated in what is becoming a common sight now... White building... Oriental Red and gold roof decorations on the ends of the building and red tiles on the roof.
We walk past a cafe on the corner of a quiet cross roads, park ourselves on a seat and order a drink and a bite to eat... The breakfast in our hotel is poor to say the least, and I'm in search of muesli...
After a while of watching the world go by we decide to go in search of a Internet cafe to organise some birthday & Christmas cards.. Curtesy of Moonpig. 2 hrs is spent by Shiree creating cards... And right at the end the computer we are using crashes.... All the last two hours work has just been lost.... After a little shaky bottom lip from Shiree we wonder off in search of another cafe... Soon finding one, and successfully get the cards sorted in half the time.... It would appear that not all Internet cafes in Thailand are as good as each other....
A little later in the evening, whilst still in the old town we get approached by a guy who has noticed us looking around a temple.... He informs us that there are around 300
temples in Chaing Mai's old town, and that the one we are looking at will have a precession of Buddhas doing a demonstration later that evening... Around 2 hours time...
He also gives us another map, as our original has vanished and kindly marks a few places of interest on this map that are less touristy including yet another night market.
We find a salad bar located close to the temple that will have the demonstration and order something light to eat and a jug of Sangria, taking advantage of the free wifi to FaceTime Amy whilst she's at work...
I'm not really sure what happened but we didn't end up seeing any demonstration... We were stood in the doorway to the temple at the correct time... But no monks could be seen.... We ending up in a tuk tuk to the night market indicated on our new map for a look around before heading back to watch a film on our hotel room telly.
