We landed in Memphis, Tennessee around 2pm this afternoon (we are now only 6 hours behind you in the UK). We flew over the football stadium and the famous Mississippi River as we came in to land. We have spent the afternoon chilling out as we were up at 05.20 hours this morning for our flight. Tomorrow we are hiring a car and visiting Gracelands and then we are planning to cross over two states, visiting Arkansas and Mississippi! Busy day!!!! Will upload more pictures tomorrow.
Had a busy day today. Picked up a car and visited Graceland. I wasn't a big fan, but certainly am now!! It is emotionally touching walking around the mansion and grounds, especially seeing and being so close to all Elvis's personal possessions. The room where he played the piano the morning before he died is very sad. The burial site is surrounded by shrines donated by fans and fan clubs from all over the world and are forever being sent there. It is even more touching as his songs and voice are heard all the way along the tour. After visiting Graceland we drove into Mississippi and walked around Holly Springs which is a real old southern town. After that we drove up into Arkansas and visited a wildlife reserve. It was snided with bugs of all kinds and the biggest Hornets ever! Not a lot of birds though! Driving back from the reserve we encounterd a number of wild land fires at the road side which was quite freaky - the temperature today was 98!!!!!! We really are in the olde deep south here, where everyone speaks with a Dolly Parton/Jody Foster accent!!!! Even in Memphis English visitors are rare and the locals are amazed when they hear us speak and ask where we are from. We tell them England and they treat us like royalty and they all comment on how proper we speak! It's really funny as they even think Tim speaks all 'proper like'!!!! Yeah, with his Sheffield accent!!!!! How hysterical!!! The accents here are really southern and it takes some getting used to. It is still a very black community with no yankees!!!!!! Tomorrow (Thursday 16th) we fly to Atlanta, Georgia. The landscape here is very different to Colorado and the other Western States, being very flat. No mountains in site here! I have uploaded photos in Albums of Memphis and also Arkansas and Mississippi.
