Day 5 - Pakbeng, Laos (on the Mekong) Friday 23rd April
We crossed over the river into Laos and boarded a private river boat which was one of the coolest boats we have ever seen.(One has to be imported into the Swedish Archipelago!)
Our 9hour cruise along the Mekong was breathtaking and as relaxed as it can be. We had a little rain shower which was much appreciated as the temperature cooled from 35c to 30c. After lunch we stopped at a hill tribe where the people were originally from Tibet and known as 'Mong'. The small village consisted of around 12 families and some persistent but sweet children selling bracelets. It was certainly an eye opening experience.
We arrived at our stop for the night in Pakbeng. We visited a small local temple and witnessed the market which would probably have been better after dinner - see pictures!! Due to local recommendations, the water buffalo was on the menu. (big chewy but very yummy!)
After dinner the heavens opened and we were treated to our first monsoon! This quickly followed by a power cut throughout the entire village and lasted until the following morning. Time for ZZZz's!
As tempting as it might be, do not wrap yourself in tin foil in a thunderstorm!!
