I managed to get myself up early in my island paradise this morning despite every bone in my body wanting to sleep in. About half an hour after I had gotten up, my early morning wakeup call came, which I hadn't ordered. I almost said, Yes Mum, when I picked up the phone. Really? People can't get themselves out of bed at 7:30am? Must just be an occupational hazard of having to organize everyone all the time and not ever having someone to organize you.
I went down to the restaurant for breakfast and noticed there were baby sharks swimming around between the beams and all sorts of tropical fish. What a lovely environment to have breakfast in, I thought. I had my beef bacon and eggs, unfortunately this is a Muslim country so no real bacon. Definitely a point against the Maldives there.
I went down to the jetty and hopped on the excursion boat and was then driven for about two hours with no information about where we were going. The scenery was very pretty, but somehow got repetitive really quickly. Island, reef, ocean, Island, reef, ocean, Island reef, ocean. I think I actually fell asleep at one point. At last we were able to jump overboard and snorkel for a while, even though there was no sign of our quarry, the whale shark.
The marine life was beautiful and the reef was amazing, at one point we even saw a sea turtle pretty close up too. It was wonderful the be in the water with such a beautiful creature. We got back on the boat and had a quick lunch before continuing to look for the whale shark for another hour, it had become apparent that our crew ad basically given up, so they let us jump over board for another go in the water.
This time I saw lots of Nemo fish, a few baby reef sharks and even came face to face with a moray eel during one of my deep dives into a cave. I got back on the boat and we set off again, it was nice to just sit there and watch the watery world go by. I think I lost count of how many islands we passed. Each island sat there, only about a metre about sea level, no hills or mountains, just tiny strips of land in a huge ocean.
The rest of the group went overboard once more, near our island, I elected to sit on the roof of the boat and watch. It was nice up there just appreciating the vista. We got back at about 4pm and I was exhausted, so I went back to my room for a nap before dinner.
