Today we had a guided tour of 10 out of 11 churches in Lalibela. The churches were amazing cut straight out of the rock. The best one was the church of St. George, which is carved into the shape of a cross. We were allowed into the churches and had someone following us around carrying our shoes all day.
We went through this tunnel, which wasn't lit at all.We were not allowed flash lights and it was pitch black. It was supposed to be like a leap of faith, you go through the tunnel in the pitch black gripping onto the walls and when you reach the light at the end of the tunnel its like you have made it to heaven. It was a really cool, spooky experience.
After the churches we went to the local markets, which were nearly all food and animals. Some of the cruelty I saw was horrible, so I didn't stay long. I hiked back up the hill and I think I only just made it. Kristel, Sharyn and I went for a look around the local souvenir shops, I found this amazing dress and was going to buy it, but the shop keeper wouldn't budge from 650 birr. There was no way I was going to pay that. I know Kat got hers for 350.
We all had lunch and dinner at the "Seven Olives" Restaurant, which was possibly the nicest meal I've had since I've been in Ethiopia. Kat and I then went and used the internet in a local shop. As soon as we were in there the place seemed packed with locals and it was only a small shed. Kat danced with this guy who called himself Michael Jackson, while I fiddled about with the incredibly slow connection. I then walked back to the hotel and went off to bed, in my nice cosy room.
