Full days drive today, from Axum to Debark, the Gateway to the Simien Mountains. We arrived quite late and checked straight into our hotel. We went out for dinner at another hotel and I had spaghetti, yet again.
I had one of the best nights sleep I've had on the entire trip, the beds actually had real spring mattresses. I woke up thinking I was at home and I was so comfortable I could have been, accept for the absence of Ben.
The next morning we marched off down to the national park office to pick up our guides and pay our park entry. The guy behind the counter wanted to charge us for four days instead of three, so we all decided to only stay two days. The guy was obviously corrupt and just wanted to pocket the extra money. I couldn't believe we were still being ripped off and was feeling really sorry for Dave and Sarah for this point.
We paid the money and then headed up into the spectacular Simien mountains. On the way in we saw a whole troop of Gelada Baboons, which we could actually get really close to without them attacking us. Not like the evil Chacma Baboons of lower Africa. We all got off the truck and walked amoungst them and they did not take the slightest notice of us.Two got into a fight in front of David, but their squabble was with each other and they ignored him completely. After our wildlife encounter we pulled into camp and set up and it got really cold really quickly.
Some people went off for a walk and I just sat around, I don't do trekking. I stayed up pretty later drinking beer and watching Red Dwarf with Dave, I went to bed last and I ended up doing this funny kind of dance with a pair of shiny green eyes just beyond my tent. It was some kind of medium sized wild cat, a serval I think, I would walk forwards, the cat would walk backwards, then forwards a little and I would back away towards the truck, this went on for about twenty minutes before I managed do a flying leap towards my tent and get into bed and was freezing cold all night. I don't think I got much sleep.
