Hello again from Seoul.
I'm a third of the way through my year in Korea, now.
Yes, I've returned to the capital for the weekend. This time, at the invitation of Garry and his skype debating group. None of the group, who meet online twice a week to discuss topics in English, had ever met in person. But Stella, the organiser and instigator of the group, arranged for a few of the Seoul-ites to meet at Gate 7, Gangnam Station, and a meal nearby. They are all Korean but well educated... all graduates, i think.
So myself and Gary met Stella, Jina, Peter, Lee (Young-Chang) and Rachael. I ate broiled eel and we shared a dish straight out of the undergraduate's guide to cooking - a loaf of bread with a dollop of ice cream on top - mix and savour! I had Hoegaarden... but soon it soon turned into soju... when moved onto our second restaurant of the night - it's very Korean to go to several different eateries on the same night and have little bits in each. Here we ate samgyeopsal and toasted the group's inaugaral physical meeting - we were drowned out, however, by a rowdy bunch of trainees from Shinhan Bank - Garry has got quite obsessed by an advert on TV celebrating the Shinhan Love Card - and sure enough they wipped them out when we asked! Video now uploaded!
After our second meal it was onto a Norebang - my first proper experience of Korean Karaoke (if you don't count the effort on the way home from Wolchusan). A few songs, before the lights came up and the music ended. So, still consumed by energy we hit a hip-hop club - the Harlem, where most were dressed up in their hoodies or club colours, and I pole-danced for ages! Drunken, we found a jimjilbang, but only with Jin's help, and crashed for the night... getting up this morning with a desire to eat Sundae (Korean black pudding).
Back to work tomorrow ... but i'm definitely coming again to Seoul for the Lunar New Year, which is next month.
Phil.
