Guatemala is a beautiful country covered by a great many mountains and volcaonoes. In Antigua we hiked up Pacaya Volcano and enjoyed watching the sunset while smoke billowed out of the crater above us. On the way down we even saw the glow of lava erupting from the crater which made our day.
After our eventful journey to Lake Atitlan we relaxed by the lake and hiked up the Indian Nose to watch the sun rise over the lake. We visited a coffee plantation and sampled some of the finest coffee Guatemala has to offer. We kayaked along the lake and had to battle against the waves in order to return to our pier. We also visited the largest indigenous market in Guatemala at nearby Chichicastenango.
Semuc Champey is a beautiful and unique place with pools of water spilling over limestone rock creating a very picturesque spot to have a swim. The steep hike to the viewing point was definitely worthwhile, overlooking all the pools and a waterfall. The hostel we stayed in was an experience in itself: being in the middle of nowhere, completely surrounded by nature and having to endure freezing cold showers!
