It was a sunny day in December and we set out early for our adventure in Parque El Imposible. Our guide was called Javel and carried a machete. We started out ascending a small mountain by following a well trodden path. On the way up we were surrounded by coffee plants. Upon reaching the top we had amazing views of El Salvador and could see Guatemalan mountains on the horizon. We then continued on our way and met another guide with a bunch of barking dogs. At this point the four of us wandered off the path and into the jungle!
Our guides used their machetes to cut a path for us and we had to use tree branches to pull ourselves up the steep slopes. It was fun but hard work. At times we slipped but managed to grab onto a branch before slipping to far down. The further up we went, the denser the vegetation became and it got harder to carve our way through. We finally arrived at the sumit of Mount Leonita and the views were spectacular. We had a rest at the top and took in the magnificent vista before descending back the way we came.
It was much trickier climbing down and at times it felt like we were hanging onto branches to prevent us from falling down the mountain. We made it past the steepest slopes and then started ascending again. We walked along dead tree trunks to cross streams and continued following our guides. We had no idea where we were. Finally, we arrived at a stream where we sat down and had our lunch. We then continued our ascent, but this time we had some rocks to use as stepping stones. We passed a load of pacaya trees which were really good to grab onto as they were flexible yet strong. We went through a coffee plantation and then came across soneone's house where we rested a while. There were barking dogs and a few chickens strutting around. Two of them were either kissing or fighting, it was hard to tell.
We continued down a dirt road which was a nice break. We then started to ascend to Mount Leon which was the tallest mountain and had great views. We started going up a cobbled road but then turned off down a very narrow path which had a steep drop on the left had side. We were surrounded by yellow and purple flowers. After half an hour we reached the summit. The view was spectacular, and we could just make out the Pacific Ocean to the Southwest. On a clear day you would be able to see the three volcanoes in Guatemala. After taking in the views we decended down hill. We left one of the guys at another house and continued walking down a road.
After a while we hitched a ride with a local man carrying bananas and tomatoes back to his house. We then continued walking to the bottom of the mountains and waited for a ride to the town of Tacuba.
It was an awesome trip and definitely one of our favourite days!
