Penny and Peter's big adventure
Hi everyone
We arrived in Christchurch on the 24th and have spent the last few days exploring the city. The city has quite an English feel with the River Avon winding its way the centre, they even have punts for hire.We took a guided city walk which took us around the most interesting places of interest.Had a
few rides on the tram which runs on a circular route around the centre and is great fun with an interesting commentary by the driver.Yesterday we went to the Antarctic Centre which has a fantastic display of information about life in the Antarctic. We were able to experience an Antarctic storm, with the temperature dropping to -25,although we seem to remember feeling colder on the West Sands at St. Andrews! The highlight was a 15 minute ride on a Hagglund tracked vehicle which is used in the Antarctic. The ride took us on a quite scary course outside,up and down steep hills at speed,on the circular donut at an angle of about 35 degrees,up the hill of terror which was 7metres high then finishing through the water which came up to window level. An exhilerating experience. We are taking the train through the mountains to Greymouth on Monday,a four hour trip each way, should be fantastic if the weather is good.Have not had the best of weather since we arrived,it has been quite cool and wet.Later next week we leave with Matt for Queenstown in the south.
Hope that everyone is well.
Love from Penny and Peter.
