Today was quite a long drive (200km) down from Cape Tribulation, back across on the cable ferry, past Cairns and down to a very small town called Babinda with a huge population of 1170 people. My first stop was at the information centre to find out what walks there were in the local area and also to find out where I can park the van for free tonight. I am already regretting hiring the van as I didn't know that you had to pay to park the van everywhere.
While in the town I had a walk around and although there were not many shops open I did manage to find a local Aboriginal arts and crafts store and buy a hand pained boomerang. Now that I have my van I can buy as much as I like as I don’t have to carry a 25kg backpack around but I must remember that I will have to post some stuff home soon as I am still carrying a hammock that I bought in Bangkok.
I had made my plans for tomorrows walk and I decided to head out this evening back in to town and go and see a film at the cinema there. My first stop was for a quick pint in the local bar where they were showing the live election results on the TV and I got talking politics to the only other person in the bar, who was a 60’ish old man.
The "Babinda Munro Picture Theatre" dates back to the 1950’s and inside looked very much like a school hall as all the seats were at the same level but the seating was all hessian deck chairs. It was quite weird but a great experience. I grabbed my box of popcorn and a coke and took a seat.
When the film started, which was “Grown Ups” staring Adam Sandler, I was amazed that they had such a brilliant Dolby Digital surround sound system set up in this “hall” which sounded great. Who would have thought it, in a place like this!

Katie Is there a cafe or good restaurants in town?
peterward Katie, from memory there was not really much in town. just a couple of hotel/bars and an information centre. The cinema and the aboriginal centre are well worth a visit. Peter
Katie Thank you for the info. I am going to babinda to work for 6 months and bit worried since it is small town and hard to find information... Thanks again. Cheers
