So today was the last real day I had for sightseeing in Washington DC. From tomorrow, it's going to be jam-packed all week, and with the Government Shutdown last time we were here, we had a lot of catching up to do. So I crammed in three museums into one busy day.
I started with the Library of Congress at 9am. Like so many of the buildings in Washington DC, it has a classical architecture. Stepping inside, it's like a cathedral devoted to the worship of books. It's an amazing building. I spent the morning ini the Rare Books room looking through some items from the Houdini collection for Jaime's research on her great, great, great grandfather Thomas Driver, who was a magician performing under the name Professor Kudarz. I took lots of photos which will hopefully help her flesh out her materials on Kudarz.
I then hustled down to the National Air and Space Museum. It's free to get in, and if I lived in DC then I'd probably spend a lot of time here. There's a lot to see, though the building itself isn't really that large. But they cram in a lot of exhibits. I didn't have a lot of time to linger, so I skimed over some of the early flight exhibits and concentrated on the space/jet exhibits. Brilliant!
I managed to find some of the other fellows from the exchange who had just turned up at the museum, so we joined forces and had a quick look at the Smithsonian Institute. It's a castle-type building, converted into an information centre with a few exhibits. We didn't spend too long there, but there was a couple of hours worth of browsing there, easily.
We ended our sightseeing tour at the International Spy Museum. This was great fun, with lots of information about the craft. It's somewhat tailored to kids, with some cool interactive stuff. But I really enjoyed it. So much, that the others were finished well before me, and had to wait while I finished off the James Bond "Exquisitely Evil" exhibit.
So ends the Washington DC sightseeing, apart from maybe seeing Arlington Cemetery on Wednesday morning. I think I managed to see most of the things I wanted to see, but there's still so much I could do. Plenty of room for a future trip to Washington DC...
