Hello everyone!
Firstly I am sorry for not updating the old blog for a while. I know you have been dying to get your fix but it is difficult to drag myself away from the beach to sit at the comp! Since I last spoke to you all I have been knocking around Indonesia. We flew from Singapore to Denpasar, Bali and spent a week in Bali. We stayed in Kuta which was interesting to say the least. We quickly came to the conclusion that Kuta is the Australian equivalent to Magaluf. We had a good time there, party a bit chilled out during the day but we felt we had to get out and see some moer of Indonesia. We decided to hire a car for a day and take a little trip down the coast. We went to a place called Uluwatu Beach. It takes some getting to, you have to climb down rickety old wooden steps to get to the beach. Not only that but monkeys will have a crack at getting at all your precious belongings. Real monkeys, not Dean. Anyway, Uluwatu was very beautiful, it is a surfers beach and not ideal for swimming and as none of us surf we decided to crack on. We then went to a place called Dreamlands which was another nice beach. We went swimming and the waves were pretty big. True to form Monks got caught in a wave and knocked his delicate knee on a rock under the water. He had to get out.
A day or so later we decided to head to the Gili Islands. A group of 3 small islands just off the coast of Lombok. We arrived on Gili Trawagan, the largest of the 3 islands (also known as Paradise), and found a place to stay. Like most places on the island the only running water we have is salt water and room isn't exactly luxury. Bt we are 1 minutes walk from a beach that stretches around the entire island. We walked around the entire island on the beach yesterday and it took us a couple of hours with a Bintang stop. That gives you some idea of the size of the island. It is a funny place, everything moves at such a slow pace but on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights they throw the best partys around. We have discovered the greatest drink here, it is called Vodka Joss. Joss is a vitamin powder similar to Barocca that you are meant to dissolve in a glass of water. But here you put the powder in your mouth, chew it so it becomes a foam and then do a shot of vodka. Vodka Joss! It's genius, you get drunk and your body is so full of vitamins that you don't get a hangover.
We also have gone on a couple of fishing trips. The first one I went with Monkey, Morgs and our Canadian buddies. Monkey caught the first fish but it wasn't much to look at, it had bulges in all the wrong places and looked like a big wart with fins. No lie, at one point I had something on my hook that must have been a few feet, we were using lines with no rod and I couldn't hold it, it cut my finger then the b***** got away. It was probably a Barracuda or maybe even a blue marlin. By the end four of the five of us had caught a fish, I had a white snapper but it was a baby, Morgan led the way with a decent sized white snapper we decided we would barbie later. The only person fishless was Cal the Canadian, his profession back in Vancouver is a commercial fisherman.
When we got back to our hostel we gave our fish to the owner and asked if we could barbeque them the next day. He said that was fine. When we came to barbie them the next day Ookie the owener told us he already had, and they were tasty. Cheers fella! On our second fishing trip Morgan Monks and I were joined by three infamous Dutchmen: Niels, Jesper and Michiel of Strawberries Hockey Club. For those of you who don't know, Strawberries Hockey Club is basically a who's who of Holland's biggest LADS. On this fishing trip we failed to catch anything, except for Monkey, who once again caught a small, slightly deformed fish. However that isn't to say the trip was entirely unseccessful, the Dutch boys bought along twenty-five 700ml bottles of Bintang (local beer). Getting from the boat to the peer at the end of the trip was interesting.
I would love to show you all some photos but I have had my camera plugged in for an hour and still have 99% to go. I think I will wait till Australia when I can get a better connection. They will come soon I promise. Right, I am off to the beach with Monkey, we have some celebrating to do. I will be in touch soon. Love you all.
