What do the fingers of your left hand and Goldmer Gat, Sunk Inner, Middle Deep, Black Deep and Kentish Knock have in common? They are all part of the Thames Estuary, where the shallows on the chart look like you have laid your left hand on it to define the shallows. Set off at 7:30 from Shotley and almost ran aground in the exit channel! The rains of yesterday had cleared, the sun and moon were out and we set off on a broad reach dodging sandbanks, wind farms and other boats. Great sailing down wind again with a favourable tide. After the most difficult navigation got the spinnaker out and was making 7 knots in 10 knots of wind. Was going to take a short cut through Folgers Gat but warned off by guard vessel for new wind farms being built. Early on there was surprisingly little big shipping considering this is the entrance to London. As we neared North Foreland the wind shifted to the nose and so had to finish on a close haul to Ramsgate. The wind and sea got up giving an exciting end to the day. We arrived at 3:30. A great end to a good week. Plan to add a little trip to France next week as we make our way back to Southampton.
