Crew change day and a chance to catch up with jobs and sleep. Yesterday was a long day ending with a fantastic sail into Milford Haven. The seas were lumpy as we rounded Land's End with a favourable tide against the wind. We started sailing at Land's End but the wind was on the nose and the tacks were taking us very slowly to our destination with an estimated passage time of 81 hours! We then decided to motor sail and eventually after 6 hours the wind backed to the north west so we sailed the rest of the way with two reefs in the main sail.
The trip has been disappointing for wild life. Lots of sea birds and seagulls. Yesterday we saw our first dolphin and a sun fish flapping on the surface. The sun did eventually come out at 3pm and stayed out until dark when the stars were easy to see as we followed the north star to Milford Haven. The milky way was clearly visible without the light pollution from land. Entering Milford at night is tricky with a mass of channel markers and cardinals plus light houses and leading line lights let alone the oil terminals. Made it to be at 05:30 after navigating the ten miles up river to Neyland. Sue, Jo & Alex have left, Trevor & Neil have joined.
A summary of last week makes interesting reflection.
Friday 0 miles
Saturday 29 miles
Sunday 0 miles
Monday 30 miles not all forwards
Then the weather stopped being gale force winds but strong in our faces.
Tuesday 106 miles
Wednesday 40 miles
Thursday 80 miles
Friday/Saturday 149 miles
Given we had gone 29 miles in the first 3 days to get to Milford Haven as planned is a great feat thanks to the brilliant crew who battled the elements and sea sickness.
