Pete and Louise's Great Adventure
G'day
Oh sorry, that's wrong now that we're in New Z. Now they just say hello grumpily and stare for a second. However, enough about New Zealand, I must tell you about my new best friend Barnsey....
The day after our last update we went on a mini bus tour of the rainforest and wildlife around Cairns. We were met in the morning by a bloke in small shorts and a moustache called 'Bob' (who took an extra special shine to Louise!) and boarded his small bus for a trip north. It wasn't the liveliest of groups: we were the youngest there by a good 30 years; there was probably a 50 year gap between us and some of them. They needed livening up a bit, but they were pleasant enough (apart from the American guy John who would NOT shut up!)
First stop was the beautiful Mossman Gorge in the Daintree Rainforest. I think Bob knew every single plant in the forest and proceeded to tell us all about them, but he was actually quite good and
it was really interesting. The gorge was beautiful and it would have been lovely to swim in it, but unfortunately we didn't really have enough time.
Shortly after we were taken for our tea and river cruise. Let's be honest, Australia is all about the Crocs! We were taken for an hours cruise by a bloke with a mullet, probably called Bill, to see the river's wildlife, which included snakes, frogs, camouflaged birds and crocs! The crocs we saw were only small females, but scary enough and there was a mixture of disappointment and relief when we returned back to the bus having not seen the local 5+ metre long male!
After lunch there was a visit to a sugar cane factory and the Daintree village where they have plants which kills the AIDs virus, but we finished the day with a visit to a local wildlife sanctuary where we saw some Emus, more crocs, a million birds such as the deadly Cassowary and fed the Kangaroos. I don't think I've ever seen Louise so happy as when she was feeding them, but they were very sweet. Good thing they were only little as the big Red kangaroos grow up to 2m tall.
However, although I laugh at the memory of Louise feeding the Kangaroos, I think she can laugh at how excited I was at seeing the Koalas; the star of the show being Barnsey!!! We got to go in his enclosure and give him a cuddle and my grin in the photos we took is very cheesy. There was another Koala there called Lewis, who let us know he was in desperate need of some female attention by making a noise somewhere between a bear and a donkey. I can do a fairly good impression on request...
After all that excitement we had a sleepy ride home and packed our bags to jet off to New Zealand! Now we're in Auckland and are leaving for the Geyserlands on Monday.
Mwah x
