Pete and Lou's Big Adventure
Wow...what an amazing couple of days! We have just got back from Phillip Island where we have spent the last 5 days. Phillip Island is about 125 km south east of Melbourne and is filled with wildlife and beaches.
The first stop was a rescue centre called Maru and Fauna Park. Here we fed Kangaroos and Wallabies, stroked wombats, watched as Tasmanian Devils and a 5 ft crocodile had their dinner and had our picture taken with Sally the koala. We also saw dingo's, emu's and the odd donkeyand goose.
Next we went to a surf beach called Woolamai which was absolutely gorgeous, the waves were huge! The fact that we were the only people on it made it even better.
Phillip Island is famous for its penguin parade. Every evening at Summerland Beach little penguins emerge from the sea, just after dusk and toddle up the beach on their way to their nests. This is exactly what happened when we went. At about 9pm you can see in the distance groups (rafts) of penguins in the sea waiting for a safe time to cross the beach. Staying in groups they waddle accross the beach and the individually go back to their nests that they keep for their entire lifetime. Once one group has afely crossed the beach the next group arrive and do exactly the same. All in all we must have seen over 1000 penguins who returned to their homes in groups of 50-100. Its a shame we weren't allowed to take photo's as these little penguins were no more than 1 metre away from us on their way up the hill. We wathced and listened to these penguins...now Lou wants to adopt one! If you come to this island it really is a must see attraction!!
We have also visited the Nobbies which is basically a group of rocks but the views are fantastic! Just past the Nobbies are Seal Rocks - home to Australias largest colony of Fur seals, which we managed to see from a distance.
For the rest of our time on Phillip Island we have been sampling its beaches and generally relaxing, although we did go on a bike ride around the island. The hostel we are staying in is great, quite homely. The island's towns is named after various places in England, as it reminded the settlers of back home.....cos its just the same(!).....there are towns called Newhaven, Cowes and Rhyll.
We have have met loads of cool people, most of which are heading to Sydney for Xmas and New Year...just like us!! It seems the entire backpacking population will be there.
Anyway best go, hope all is well....only 7 days til Xmas.....WAHOOO!! PARTY!!
Love as always,
Pete and Lou.
