Pete and Lou's Big Adventure
Bundy is such a crazy place - not much happens and if your not working its probably best not too stay too long! As we arrived around 2 - the place was dead. We quickly changed our couple of nights stay to just the one! The only things that really appealed was the turtles and the rum factory - well of course!
That night we took a taxi 15k out of Bundy to Mon Repo - a natural turtle sanctuary. At the same time every yr hundreds of adult female turtles return to Mon Repo (to where they were born) to lay eggs of their own in the sand on the beach! Eight weeks later these eggs hatch!
At the sanctuary the rangers control the habitat and vegitation for the turtles, not only for their safety but more so for thier continued exsistence!
At the sanctuary every evening you can watch either the huge adult turtles scramble up the beach to lay her eggs or the eggs hatching! We did the latter! Some may think that this is cruel but extensive research for over 50 yrs found that the presence of people has no bearing on the turtles.
So we arrived at 7pm and were advised it could be a long night as you just cant control nature! At 10pm we were called and walked down to the beach. We gathered around in a semi circle around what looked like a bubbling area of sand! A few mins later tiny 3 inch turtles emergered from the sand! All in all 85 turtles hatched! I thought i was going to cry it was so amazing!
The rangers put a wire mesh around the turtles so they wouldnt go awandering - then we had a little hold! The turtles natural instinct when born is too head towards the light which is the lowest point of the horizon. To give them a helping hand we formed what is known as the tunnel of light. We stood in two lines stretching from the nest into the sea and then watched as these turtles waddles down to the sea to begin their marine life - wicked!
Now that we have totally allen in love with these creatures and would do anything to work in place like Mon Repo, the sad reality of it is that only 1 in 1000 turtles make it too adult life!
Quite educational eh?? Sorry to bng on about it but as you have probably gathered we loved every minute! Anyways with our remaining time in Bundy we visited the rum factory and wandered around the town and river. Then on wards and upwards to Agnes Water - Town of 1770.
What can we say about this little town except theres not much going on - the one pub called last orders at 9 and theres not much street lighting! Saying that though we had a few funny days here.
We went too a beach party of a random 18yr old that we never did meet - we sat around a fire , slowing getting drunk waiting for the sun to come up! We also went on a scooter/ mini harley 4 hr tour of this town which was cool. I have never laughed as much when petes scooter conked out half way up a hill and he was left too push the thing up it. I nearly wet myself when we lapped him a few mins later. So funny! On the final day Pete helped out around the hostel doing little chores like hanging the washing up etc. Not bad for free internet and drinkies!
We are now looking forward to our 10 hr bus journey to Airlie beach....errrrr NOT!!
Hope all is ok back home.......miss you all loads. Love to all.......xxxxxxxx
