Day 8
2 June 2013
Cuzco is the continent’s oldest continuously inhabited city, and the hub of the South American travel network. The city attracts travellers who come not just to visit a unique destination but also to experience an age-old culture very different from their 20th century way of life; one could easily spend a week just in and around the area. Inca-built stone walls line most of the central streets and you don't have to go far to see other major Inca ruins. It is a city steeped in history, tradition and legend.
Every year Cuzco attracts thousands of travellers who come to delve into its noble but tragic past. It is the perfect base for optional explorations around the city and area as well as a range of outdoor activities. Relax and explore this fascinating city, and take time to acclimatize to the high altitude.
So today we head off to Cuzco, our flight takes us back to Lima and then we get a connecting flight to Cuzco. We arrive at Cuzco airport and are met by our bus. It's a lot smaller than the previous buses we've had and there is no room inside for our luggage so it all has to go up into the roof. We all pray that we don't hit a bump and that our cases don't end up on the road behind us!! There is a massive storm cloud over the mountains but in the other direction to our hotel. We arrive at the hotel which as all the hotels during this trip is very comfortable. I try to connect to the Wi Fi but with no joy. We are all meeting at 19:30 for a walk into town and dinner. The streets in Cuzco are clean and when we get to the town square it is all illuminated and is breath taking. In the corner of the square is an Irish bar, I knew at some point I would see one as I doesn't matter what part of the world you go to you always find an Irish bar to make you feel more at home. Our restaurant tonight is totally amazing not just the decor but the food is out of this world. I have the Alpaca steak which arrives on a hot volcanic stone on a wooden board so you can slice your steak and cook it to your own liking. After dinner it's back to the hotel and off to bed ready for departure in the morning. For the next 3 days our main luggage has to stay in Cuzco and everything we need has to go into our day packs.
