Melanie's Travels - The Middle East 2006
I fell asleep around 3pm yesterday and to my surprise, didn’t wake up until 9am this morning. I guess the fact that I’d spent practically 3 days with no sleep had finally gotten to me. I watched the sun set over Fira tonight. The blues and reds from the sun reflected off the whitewashed buildings. As I was walking down the caldera, a fireworks show began on the island of Nea Kameni which reminded me of Santorini’s dramatic past. Around 1650 BC a large volcanic explosion took place on the island of Santorini. The center of the island collapsed and the sea rushed in to fill it. The blast was so large that waves created by it traveled all the way to Crete. This series of events has led to the emergence of many myths, the most widely known is that this blast buried the city of Atlantis. Believers in the myth still participate in dives off the cost of Santorini in hopes of finding the treasures of this lost civilization. Me? I’m quite content with the treasures of modern-day Santorini.
