Drove up from Cairns to Daintree national park so we could explore the rainforest. The hotel consisted of small cabins on stilts right in the middle of the rainforest, i.e in the middle of nowhere, just electricity from a generator and no TV. Sat down to lunch at the hotel, only to find we were at the 'Real wild' restaurant, which had a choice of kangaroo, crocodile and emu on the menu. Thank goodness for the salad option.
The hotel had its own creek, which the owner assured us had no crocs in. The Pengelly adventurers fought our way through the rainforest down to the creek. Had an unforgettable swim - felt like the lost raiders fighting off mosquitoes and jungle perch, which look very cute when your out of the water but like to take a bite out of you when your not looking.
That night the rain forest lived up to its name and we had some phenominal rain bashing down on our cabin all night - quite nice and cosy being in the dry watching the toads rain bathing outside. Woke up at six the next morning so Matthew, Luca and I decided to go exploring. Just a few feet away from our cabin we stumbled (though I'm glad to say not literally) on an Amethystine python, which matthew tells me is the longest python in the world. Matthew ran back to tell andrew, though strangely it wasn't enough to get him out of bed. We carried on adventure to find more wildlife, but didn't find much else due to the fact that Luca insisted on singing all the way just to alert the animals ahead of time that we were coming. Two small muskrat kangaroos (glorified rats really though the hotel owner insisted they are marsupials) came to join us for breakfast.
Headed back to civilisation in Cairns via Mossman gorge; nicked some sugar cane and coconuts from the roadside as we went along.
