After Sydney I headed over to central Australia to spend a couple of days at Ayers Rock. I had been given varying advice about the place ranging from 'Its a blood rock in the middle of nowhere, why are you bothering' to 'its a wonderful area with amazing history and spirit'. Well for what its worth I had a great time.
Spent a day at the Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), walked the Valley of the winds with a family I met who took me round. Also went to Uluru (Ayers Rock) for a guided tour of the rock and its history and significance. The Aboriginies request that the rock is not climbed for fear of injury and also some places have vary important spiritual significance...many ignore this request and fortunately the decision was taken away from me as the wind was very high which forced the climb to be closed to all.
The small airstrip and resort which used to be next to the rock have now been removed and a new resort has been built a few miles out from the sacred Aboriginal land. It was fascinating to hear the stories and parables about how the rock was created and how every aspect of the rock was used to teach children about how to correctly deal with an aspect of life.
If I had had the time I would have spent some time in Alice Springs where many Aboriginies live and also head to the Kings Canyon which is apparently wonderful...Next time!!
