After a pretty decent sleep, we were treated to an amazing breakfast of pancakes and bacon plus the usual German breakfast of buns, meat, cheese, fruit and coffee. They have the best strawberries I have ever tasted!
After breakfast, we drove to the nearby town of Anholt to visit the "water castle", Wasserburg. It was built in the 12th century and is completely surrounded by water which looks more like a lake than a moat. It was heavily damaged just days before the end of the 2nd world war and was rebuilt over eight years. Family members still live in parts of the castle.
The tour of the castle was in German but Rod did a good job of translating the important parts for me. My favourite part was the castle kitchen where it was easy to imagine what life was like in the Middle Ages. After the tour, we wandered through the grounds and the beautiful gardens. Jet lag hit us on the drive back (which went through the Netherlands) so we had a much-needed nap when we got back!
After our nap, Olaf and Sabine made us a lovely salmon dinner. We were joined later by many of their friends who came to meet 'the Canadians'! They were all able to speak English which made it very nice for me and we had a wonderful evening.
