From Granada we took a bus to Managua (the capital) and to the airport for something all 3 of us had eagerly been awaiting. Located 70km off the coast of Nicaragua in the middle of the Caribbean are the Corn Islands. Once populated by pirates and buccaneers, the islands are now low-key Caribbean paradise location spots. We were heading there for a one and a half week Easter break and we were going to do as little as possible. We had all been on the road for over 6 months and would be returning home in less than 3. Things such as work, cold weather, debt and monotony were not looking as distance as they once had and we were all looking forward to relaxing and enjoying a hassle free existence as much as possible in our dwindling time.
So we boarded our bi-plane in Managua, I was thrilled to finally fly in one, and took the short flight to Big Corn Island. We spent one night on Big Corn and 10 on the smaller, less developed Little Corn. I won’t describe in depth what took place on the islands, partly because they are places I am reluctant to talk about, especially when it comes to Little Corn Island. It is now a location I consider to be very special and I want to keep its secrets personal. The other reason I won’t say too much is because as I sit here in a thatched hut, writing in my travel journal, surrounded by white sands and the most beautifully clear blue-green water I have ever seen, I really don’t have the power to do anything too strenuous.
To keep it simple my time on Little Corn Island was mostly spent sitting in the sun and eating very well. All the food was incredible; fresh coconuts fallen off the tree, fresh pineapples for breakfast, fish and lobster caught that very day, rondon, empanadas, coconut bread, banana cake, it was all delicious. That’s basically all I’m going to say. The rest is saved for my memories that I may share, eventually.
Oh yeah. I also grew a marvellous moustache while on the island. One I hope Billy Tweedale would be proud of.
