After completing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing I spent a day in Taupo relaxing and recovering, the sauna at the hostel came in very handy. I also bought a cap to hide my out of control hair. It had never been longer and was getting increasingly harder to manage; I was hoping this was just the awkward middle stage of growing. After Taupo the Kiwi Experience took us to the Rangitikei River to spend a night at River Valley. This was a picturesque little lodge on the rivers edge and I stopped at so people can go white water rafting, planning to do this later on in my trip I opted out.
After River Valley we headed south to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. Instead of jumping on the ferry the night day like many on the bus I spent 4 nights in ‘Wellywood’, the weather was awful. The place lived up to its name of the Windy City; the wind also brought rain with it for the entire of my stay. This meant I couldn’t do the mountain biking I was hoping on so instead I had a chilled few days. I sat around the hostel reading and watching films, I visited the Te Papa museum which was very good and rode the cable car to the Botanic Gardens. Apart from that there wasn’t much else to do. I hadn’t travelled to New Zealand for the cities but for the outdoors, I understood that, I couldn’t help feeling let down though. I also had the country earmarked as a place to possibly emigrate but after seeing the two biggest cities in Auckland and Wellington I found it they wouldn’t have enough to keep me entertained. Melbourne was proving difficult to beat.
