Day 46. A visit to the Pearl Luggers Museum in the old town. The presentation on the history of pearling and the very dangerous job of the early pearl divers fascinating. From the 1850's the lugger masters used 'blackbirding' for collecting pearl shell, then from 1880 to 1973 Japanese divers dressed in extremely heavy dive suits with Malay tenders for collecting mother of pearl and natural pearls. Huge fortunes were made from pearling, mainly by the lugger masters and some divers. Morning tea on the shaded verandah of the old Matsumoto Building and later lunch in the Shady Lane Cafe. Stopping at the Japanese Cemetery we were amazed by its size and beautiful headstones. But the highlight of our day was a sunset camel ride along Cable Beach. Driving along the beach before our ride we strayed into the nudist end of the beach - not a pretty site so we decided to get outta there! Our camel was named 'Sunny' and he was absolutely gorgeous. There were 12 other camels in our 'yellow blanket' camel train. After viewing a magnificent sunset on Cable Beach we sadly departed Broome for our van park. A quick dinner of barbecue chicken with salad. Hot 34 degrees today, we have really enjoyed our stay in Broome. So many friendly people and brilliant scenery with some very memorable experiences!
