Day 85. Up early and after breakfast we left our van in the NP and drove up to see the ancient giant Tingle tree near Walpole. Beautiful forest road for 6km with giant trees and then a walk for 800m, the 450 year old Tingle tree was enormous with a girth of 24m and we could even walk inside it! Hitched up the van and then onto pretty town of Denmark for morning coffee in the Coffee Roasters Cafe. Beautiful shady park by the river, so much care taken in these little towns with their flower gardens, cafes, street signs and paved streets. Next onto a real jewel Albany arriving at lunchtime. We checked into the Big 4 on white sandy Middleton Beach, immaculate! Even has a spa! We spent the afternoon exploring the heritage drive around Albany, a beautiful small city founded in 1829 by a shipload of settlers and marines from Sydney to prevent the French from claiming WA! A pod of whales lazing about just offshore up from our van park. Up to the new National Anzac Centre and Avenue of Honour for a panoramic view of King George Sound, Princess Royal Harbour and old Albany. In 1914 over 41,000 ANZ troops left Albany bound for the Great War, many never to return. Next a drive along the heritage York Street and down to the port where two ships were loading. So many pretty old cottages, solid Victorian era buildings and parks in this amazing city. Dinner tonight leftovers with a couple of Golden Ales. Drove 150km, fine sunny 20 degrees. A great day!
