Day 39. Breakfast on the deck at the Fitzroy Crossing Lodge today, traditional land of the Gooniyandi people. Beautiful view out to the river and grassy van park. Drove down to the Old Crossing and stopped for photos. We were amazed at how huge the Fitzroy River must be in full flow in the wet season - presently a dry huge sandy channel with big waterholes but it can rise above 18 metres in the wet! A drive around the hot dusty town very interesting. Late afternoon we went on a boat cruise led by the Rangers up nearby Geikie Gorge, absolutely spectacular! The river and time has carved out caves and holes in the 80 metre sandstone walls and polished them into brilliant colour bands of white, red and yellow. The reflections on the water sharp and brilliant. Getting late on the way back so after refuelling we had dinner and drinks in the Lodge bar of pizza and chicken schnitzel. Hot 31 degrees, drove 50km.
