Day 22. Rose early to drive down to Parry Lagoon, a national register site for bird life and salties on the lower Ord River floodplain. Lagoon full of water lilies in flower and water birds. A large crocodile cruising the shallows. Then 20km onto Wyndham where we spent a lazy day checking out the old pioneers cemeteries, wharf area and old town shops and hotel. An historical town founded in 1885 with real character, once shipping over 2 million cattle through its now defunct meat works. Constant road trains bringing iron ore and nickel ore into the port. Met an old local called Pixie who has lived here for 30 years. Ross tells me of the old days when as a young fella he would drink at the pub and swag down in the old cemetery with his mates! A tourist just caught a 3 kg catfish off the brand new Kevin Rudd funded jetty! The old town museum a real gem of info on the early port, Afghan camel trains, meat works, large crocodiles (6 metre man eaters) and our indigenous brothers. Up to the lookout on sunset for a beer with a view of 5 rivers entering the Chamberlain Gulf - Pentecost, King, Forrest, Ord and Durack. Dinner tonight at the Wyndham Town Hotel down at the Port.
