Friday - We arrive at The Windsong Lodge in Seward around 5.30 pm and are really impressed. We have a beautiful riverside setting, with a sunset ( if it ever did!) over the mountains, and the accommodation in wooden lodges among the trees. We take the shuttle into town for dinner: parts are nice, good restaurants and shops, nice seafront, but in between a very large and scruffy campground, really busy, full of big camper-vans and looking more like a car park than a campsite - quite a strange mixture.
Saturday - A leisurely start this morning (no 5 o'clock alarm - yipee!) We head out for our Kenai Fjords Cruise. The weather is perfect, the boat luxurious and we find our first humpback whale about 5 minutes after sailing out! In the course of the day we see a few more of them, orcas, porpoises, eagles, puffins, sea lions, sea otters, mountain goats and a bear swimming across from an island to the shore! On the shore are a group of kayakers who head towards the swimming bear with their cameras!! Thankfully, the two don't meet. We visit Aialik Glacier - amazing and so calm that the sea even looks like ice! So another wonderful excursion!
Back at the lodge, enjoying a well- deserved Alaskan Summer Ale on the terrace in the sunshine, when our new friends from Wisconsin Bob and Diane walk by! It's an emotional reunion after a day apart! So we have dinner with them. Another great day ends: tomorrow we board the cruise ship and start our voyage back to Canada.
