Start of 4 day "Inka Jungle Trek"
Oh my god I am so hung over!! Must have had a few more than I thought! Up at 6 for 630 pick up. I am off on a 4 day "Inka Jungle Trek". 4 days of adventure and activities and the last day seeing Machu Picchu (last word pronounced peek - choo). A 3 hour mini bus journey listening to six 20 year old girls talking about boys and university and tv shows and two lovebirds right in front of me constantly touching each other and nibbling each others ears when I'm hungover is not my idea of fun! We eventually get to the top of Abra Malaga (4200m) where we were all (about 20 of us. Another minibus met us there) given mountain bikes and what seemed like full body armour. EXTRA LARGE OVER HERE FOR THE SENORITA! " one of our guides shouts to his friend when the body armour doesn't fit. Everyone turns to look at me. Nice. At least he called me senorita! After a full safety briefing we then followed our guide racing down the long winding road, taking 3 hours and stopping twice. Apparently the views were spectacular but it was all just a blur to me! My hangover is now gone though. Ok I'm dramatising the hangover a bit really. It left me the moment I got on the bike. We went hurtling down the hill after the guide. It's not a race he said. But of course it was! After the guide it was one other guy then me. I made sure of that. I certainly wasn't going to get stuck behind the slow girly girls! It was tense and exciting keeping up with them. Sometimes the bends looked a bit tight as we approached a bit fast but if the 1st and 2nd guy could do it, so could I! And I did! We passed 2 random donkeys meandering up the hill, some policemen raiding a property to confiscate the extra cocoa leaves they had...they must like a nice hot chocolate in the evening, went through waterfalls, dodged falling boulders, (ok they were small stones but there was definitely potential for boulders) and of course the stray dogs. Mosquitoes splatted at my glasses the whole way down and one even found it's way into my helmet and buzzed round my ear! I suffered in silence though cos I wasn't about to stop...that would lose my place!
Then we went for lunch and went to our 1st hostel for the night. The 2 lovebirds had one room then one other key was given to me and 2 German 20 year old boys! I started to protest but then thought oh well whatever. I later found out the lovebirds paid extra for a private room or we possibly would have all been in the same room..hostel type.
The rest of the afternoon was relaxing while some of us chose to do rafting. I chose not. Only because I have loads of time and I can do that any time. There was a storm though and apparently that made it a whole lot more exciting!
Dinner then beer with my new group (the lovebirds, the Germans and me) then bed.
