Buenos Aires
I'm sitting up on the terraced roof of the Rock Hostel (my room is called Pink Floyd. How cool. The reviews said if you want to sleep, this is not the place to be. What have I done?) sipping a bacardi, reading my book and listening to a violinist and guitarist practice their tango music! And they're really good to top it off! The weather is beautiful. This has been the 1st time I've enjoyed sitting out in the sun - oh did I tell you that already? Anyway, it's 430pm and I've done nothing all day, except get in the kitchen and cook part of tonight's meal before everyone else (30) gets in there!
So I thought I'd write a bit about my thoughts and feelings. This is my 57th day. It's Friday so it's also 8 weeks exactly! (ok i know I've gone wrong somewhere but hey)
so what do I miss?
*Andy. More than I thought. But I only miss chilled out Andy and find that's the Andy I'm thinking about mostly. I want him to be happy more than anything in the world. One day that will happen. I'm sure
*Vegetables. Since over spending on my cruise I'm only just starting to do the whole supermarket thing, and I've found there are almost NO fresh vegetables! Someone said the supermarkets get a delivery only once a week. Seems like I've been getting there the day before the next delivery.
* Singing. Singing at the top of my voice in my car
* Feeling attractive. I have felt unattractive this whole time. I'm now in Buenos Aires and can't go out in the evening to sample the delights of Tango dancing as I simply have nothing to wear. In fact I haven't been out ANY evening, for this reason.
* The gym! It's the only thing that stops me piling on the pounds
* Having a good old girly intimate chat with my friends
* Laughing. See above. At least I'm getting no more laughter lines while I'm here!
* Being understood and understanding people
* privacy
* sleeping less than fully clothed, and without my passport!
* blow drying my hair
I went out for a wander around 6. Buenos Aires is HUGE. It seems there are loads of city centers. My hostel is right on the main square in one of these. As I'm wandering, I feel a sense of unease. I hold my bag slightly closer to me. I think I am justified in this, as there seem to be a lot of crazy people here. If they're not crazy, they're drunk, or drugged op on something, or simply homeless. I went into a bank and was overcome with the pungent smell of one of these many homeless people sleeping in the foyer. What a lovely reminder of my last job! The bank was closed. It was one of these 24hr areas. People are selling things EVERYWHERE, desperate for the tourist's money. From the guys washing your windscreen whether you like it or not at the red traffic light, to the dodgy looking "real gold" necklaces and handbags, to the caramel covered nuts. I sat in the park with the fountain and just people watched for a while before heading back for dinner.
I'm the oldest one here. Again. But that doesn't bother me. This hostel is £7 per night so I'm staying 4 nights, till after Sunday. I have been looking for where I can watch tango dancing (cos I'm in Argentina's capital. I must, right?) Joining in is not an option as I have no nice clothes, and going to a nice evening event is out for the same reason. I say evening but all the action starts late here, 2/3am! So I've discovered that after the Sunday market, when the sun goes down, every sunday, people start dancing there, in the street! Perfect. I can stay in my casual clothes and enjoy all the fun, then have an early night!
After my last horrible bus journey I have treated myself to a luxury next journey up to Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil. Now THAT'S a waterfall!
It gets to around 11pm and it's starting to liven up at the hostel. There's live music so all the tables are moved to get ready. In the mean time some of the boys start a game of "beer pong". I watch, think it looks fun, and join in next time. Our team wins! After the entertainment (a lone male sexy singer and his guitar. He sings in Spanish and they are his own songs. Nice, but very slow). The mood has changed from party to chilled out while he sings. Then we get back into it after. Another drinking game. My team wins again! Yey! A great night is had by all and I fall into bed at 4am!
