I decided to write a blog--a blog.. short for "web log", that scary process of putting your thoughts out there for the world--literally the world can look on. I have some done some amateur writing, and I love that process, but this whole blog idea seems so, well--open. At any rate, I found an article titled, Top 10 Tips for Beginning Bloggers. That sounds like another name for Blogging for Dummies, so I set out to de-dummy myself.
Tip 1 - Define your goals...Okay, that is easy. If the Lord wills, my best friend and I will get on an airplane head for Alaska soon...a trip we have always wanted to take. The only sad part of this is that we can't take our loved ones with us. This blog will be my feeble attempt to share this trip with them...much the same way that web cams have made it possible to share the newest generation with us. Not exactly the same, but much better than snail mail and middle of the night (so they are affordable) phone calls that I grew up with. So, the #1 goal of this is to record and share. Goals #2 and following will be subject to later definition.
Tip 2 - Know your audience. I gave birth to three of them, so I would say I know them pretty well. The next three are the ladies they (and we) love, and who are like the daughters we would have chosen. Then our young 'uns' young 'uns--hopefully they will be able to see us in pictures with the "wildlife" of Alaska. There are a few others in our extended family who may be reading, and we are blessed to have a lot of truly good friends who are like family to us, so there is a chance they will be part of this "audience" (which makes it sound like i am performing, and that is not it at all). Anyone else looking on this is probably family in one form or another or friends who are like family. If anyone out there in cyberspace gets on and you don't know us, leave a comment about the biggest trip you have ever taken and we will start out on common ground.
3, 4, 5, and 6: 3. Be consistent. (I will try) 4. Be persistent. (If not, I would have given up long before now.) 5. Be inviting. (I always try to be.) 6. Be visible. (This is the scary part I mentioned earlier.)
7 & 8. Take risks (I know this is talking about writing a blog, but it has a different tone on this trip) and ask for help. (HELP!!!!!)
9. Keep learning. We are planning to travel close to 10,000 miles in 2½ weeks by plane, ship, the "fastest and biggest" catamaran in Alaska, RV, motor coach, water jet-powered catamaran, bus, rental car, taxi, and our sore feet, to see a world we have never seen. I think the learning curve will be high, and I can't wait.
10. Be Yourself. I have tried to be other people, and it doesn't work, so that is pretty much all I can be. Given a choice of a museum or a mountain, I will take a mountain. Visit glaciers or shopping malls? Give me the glaciers. God's beauty offers so much more, in my opinion, than man's handiwork. Just an opinion, but that is who I am.
Starting May 25, if the Lord wills, we will embark on this part of our journey. My first glance of the Grand Canyon a few years ago brought up so many emotions. We took hundreds of pictures, but I also wanted to capture those feelings with words. I predict this will be the same, and if I follow tips 3 and 6 above, my heart will speak in this process. I hope you can join us. If you stop by for a visit, please leave a message so I will know you were here.
p.s. Back to the topic of writing a blog, as I was beginning to type this, I mis-typed "glob" instead of "blog"….hope that isn't a prediction of things to come.
