Paul & Deborahs RTW trip
Hello maates!
Right where to start? i'll start here. We arrived in Hawaii just over a fortnight ago now. We had a few nights booked in a hostel in Waikiki (the capital of the island of Oahu) so we got a bus there. Waikiki is the resorty bit of Honolulu. Honolulu is a pretty boring city except for Chinatown bit which is excellent you really feel like your in china and theres loadsa markets and chinese people. Anyways we were staying in waikiki which is nice but very touristy its a bit like an American Costa del Sol to be honest lots of high rise hotels and stuff - you can kinda see from the photo which this time is actually of where we stayed. However despite its touristyness its got a cool feel to it - the beach is ramjam (busier than camber sabnds defos) but is really nice and is a good place to people watch. We stayed in the hostel 4 nights then moved to this nice hotel which we got for 19quid a night which is a bargain as Hawaii is well expensive ( a loaf of bread is atleast 2 pounds!) we got it really cheap coz deborah bullied the poor chinese man called lincoln who was calculating our bill for us - it was well funny and also good as he got it totally wrong and we paid a lot less than we shuda.
Most days we've just been lazing on the beach and walking round the parks and stuff. If you walk a mile or two out of waikiki you can find postcard-like beaches that are pretty much deserted xcept a few surfers its great its like being on a desert island but then you walk for 20mins and you can get burger king and fall baclk into your hotel. Thats cool because you'd get fed up with the touristy bit otherwise. One day we did a tour of the island on this like minicoach - it was excellent - your drivers a tourguide (ours was called Cousin David! - he was well weird he pointed out absolutely everything we went past then told you how to spell it and how to pronounce it - often twice in a row - he was like a computer program - he could only speak in that way and didn't try to speak any other way. so for example we'd go past a palm which you see literally everywhere you look and he'd go; Thats a Fan Palm spelt F-A-N pronounced 'FAN' ! and on your left is another Fan palm spelt F-A-N pronounced 'FAN' ! he really did say exactly that - FOR THE WHOLE DAY! 9-5! Me and deborah couldn't stop laaughin was so funny. Anyway the trip was really good we went to lots of desrted beaches, some rainforest, pineapple plantations, nut farms, surf beaches, a blowhole, some volcano craters and basically all the stuff the tourists dont see. it was great. we saw a turtle swimming too.
Another day we climbed to the top of a volcano - its extinct so it wasnt dangerous but was fun. Its called Diamond head and you can see it on the right of the photo on this page. its higher than it looks there. Anyway we got caught in the heaviest rain ive ever seen it was unbelievable (it poured with rain nearly all our first week - it sucked a bit as we couldnt leave the hotel room sometimes it was so heavy) it was like standing in a power shower but worse actually - we got soaked! and theres was all waterfalls coming down the side of the volcano and walkin up the path to the top (in my Havaianas!) was a little tricky as it had turned into a river but was worth it. When we got to the top you got excellnt views back over Waikiki and then another cloud swept in and we were inside the cloud and couldn't even see 5metres ahead - was spooky but cool.
The other day we went to a nature reserve called Hanuama Bay which is a bay thats almost totally circular and with green mountains behind, a sandy beach along the shore and a coral reef in the water. It looks exactly what you think a tropical island looks like - really is beautiful. We bought some snorkels and masks and went snorkelling in the reef. it was amazing there were loads of neon fish - was probably the highlight of our time here.
Anyway all in all Hawaii - or Oahu - hawaii is 7 island and we only saw 1 its not very practical or cheap! to see the others- is brilliant, its very different to san fran and boston as you can imagine but you can still tell your in america coz it is pretty touristy but we've had a wkd fortnight here. now we're off to fiji where we're staying on a desert island! It should be interesting i think its only an acre or two so is gona be a bit different to what we've done so far. We'll let you know how that goes. miss you - love paul and Deborah xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
