A bit longer driving in the Praries (they turned into cute mini-hills that looked like pregnant women with big boobs lying down everywhere - sort of low down but prominent bumps - which were covered in that mossy grass that looks like a carpet; I was half expecting to see a Dartmoor pony pop out. Zipping across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and (most of) Alberta with their wide straight roads, sensible speed limits, excellent visibility and cool sky views, has been my favourite thing so far. I was puzzled for a lot of the way however, as I knew we would end up in the Rocky Mountains by the end of the drive, And I couldn't imagine the extreme flatness suddenly becoming mountains. But it did! They creep up on you because initially, on the horizon, they are the colour of the sky and they just look like dusky blue shapes in the sky...until it becomes slowly apparent that the shapes are mountains! As soon as they are seen, heading into Banff is basically just heading straight into them. Rosa: 'oh my goodness so that's a mountain!' And here we are, with our trusty tent in a basic campground and strict rules to leave nothing at all - no garbage, no toiletries, no cooking equipment, not even a cooler, outside at night or if you leave the site. Everything vaguely food related must be stored in closed containers inside the car. Bear warnings. And Cougars. And coyotes. But mainly bears. Sleep well! Banff is freaking beautiful btw. Yay!!!
