Mon 28th Aug: Today we got up early had a good breakfeast and prepared for our 2.5hrs hike through rainforest to the otherside of the island to see arguably one of the most beautifuçl beaches in the world - LOPES MENDES.......unreal! The skies were threating to rain as we made our way up the mountain through the forest...we had no guide and relyed completely on timber signs that were not clearly posted. it was a really though hike, in fact it was more like rock climbing then hiking and as we approched half way it began raining very heavily - we got absolutley drenched!!!!!! we ran for cover in a little cafe ( not really a cafe but have no idea how to describe it) on one of the beaches - we weaited there for about 40mins for the rain to stop but it didnt so we took off in the hope it would eventually clear up. we eventually got to LOPES MENDES and it was completely deserted - i assume due to the rain. it was amazing - sand as far as the eye could see surronded by rain forest as far as the eye could see. supposedly `the surf` is ment to be some of the best in the world and though i know little about surfing, i was knocked over twice by the strength of the waves so id say it must be good!!!! we stayed on the beach for an hour or so and then realised that it would get dark soon so we shoudl head back. we hiked to next beach just 20mins away where you can get a boat to Abrao (where our hostel was) but the last boat left at 4pm and it was now about 4.20. As its not summer in Brazil it gets dark early - approx 6pm which ment we really needed to hurry if we were to be back before darkfall. SO...........we legged it as fast as we could - we basically ran up and down rocks for 1.5hrs - if it got dark we would be f***ed because you wouldnt see your hand infront of you so you wouldnt be able to walk for fear of walking straight off the cliff - there are just no lights on the entire island...you have to take my word for it, we would have been screwed!!!!!!!! the last 20mins of our hike was done in mild darkness and by the time we hit abrao it was completely dark - if we had left it 20/30mins later we would have had to stay in the rain forest till morning.......it was mad......pretty good fun though!!! when we got back to hostel we had a big dinner, a couple of beers and hit the sack.
