On the road again, we drove along the Alaska Hwy, dipping slightly into BC at one point and crossing the Continental Divide, again separating the west-flowing and east-flowing rivers.
An interesting roadside stop was a view of the Lost Landscape of Quesnellia - formerly volcanic islands, crushed against the North American continental plate. The islands have long since eroded but we can see the granite 'roots' and the angular spikes of an ancient magma chamber. One peak is a perfect triangle, looking much like a pyramid from a distance.
We decided to stop in Teslin as it is halfway to Whitehorse. Temperature is again down to 6 C and it is raining heavily at 3:30 pm. We stayed at the Yukon Motel & Lakeshore RV Park and explored their Wildlife Gallery - a small but worthwhile display of Yukon wildlife taxidermy. Each exhibit has been meticulously displayed with appropriate painted backdrops along with rocks, plants and other animals.
An interesting stop near Teslin was the George Johnston Museum, dedicated to the memory and history of a local native photographer who was way ahead of his time. He taught himself to develop his own photos, bought the first car in the area then built a road and charged folks for a ride. Amazing history!
Next stop was the Teslin Tlingit Heritage Centre. We listened to one of the elders tell how to take moose hide from the slaughtered animal to clothing decorated with beads. She told us that she is teaching classes in the Heritage Centre as well as in the local schools. Very encouraging! Again, a worthwhile visit.
Rainy, very windy, and outside temp 3 deg. C at 4:00 AM. Beginning to wonder if we're going the right direction?? Suspect that there is snow in the surrounding mountains this morning, but can't see them because of the heavy fog.
