21 to 28 February
Really enjoying our time in Fiji - very relaxing after our time camping in New Zealand. Have been chilling out on the beach, taken out a kayak a few times and seen more turtles. Pat went diving last Sunday and I went snorkelling. Trip out to Beqa Lagoon was pretty rough as the winds had got up. Visibility for diving and snorkelling wasn't that good so it was a bit of a disappointment. Still saw lots of lovely fish though - it just wasn't up to the usual Fijian standards. Never mind, we still enjoyed it.
Went into Suva a couple of days ago, it's a busy city and we didn't stay too long. Visited the Fiji Museum which was quite interesting - told us all about the cannibalism and history of Fiji.
Yesterday we visited Nukusere Village which is situated 22 km up the Navua river. It took us one and a half hours to get there on a motorised canoe seeing Fijian ladies doing their washing in the river along the way. Turned out to be a very interesting journey as we were going up the rapids (kind of white water rafting Fijian Style)! When we got to the village we were greeted by a Fijian Warrior and the Chief of the village and taken to their meeting house where we were welcomed in traditional Fijian style by Kava. It looks like muddy water but has an anaeasthetic effect on your tongue and lips (apparently its considered by Western medics to be a narcotic)! Anyway, it would have been insulting not to indulge so we both had to join in and drink! We then had lunch provided by the villagers and they then danced and sang for us and we had to join in too. We'd taken along sweets and colouring pencils for the children and it was lovely to see their faces and they all shook our hands when we left. After being shown around the village we then had to face the boat journey back. It started to rain as we were quite far inland in quite a hilly region so we got really wet! We stopped off at a waterfall on the way back for a swim which was quite exhilarating. The journey back through the rapids was a little easier as we were going with the flow and not against it. One hairy moment though was when we saw what we thought were logs in the water in front of us - it was in fact a couple of cows crossing the river which we missed by inches! Another very interesting day.
Before we went out yesterday, we were sitting on our veranda having a cup of tea when we saw a turtle swimming across in front of our bure not very far out to sea. You could see its head pop up and see its flippers coming out of the water - it was brilliant.
Today we've just been relaxing in the resort and took the kayak out this morning before it got too hot. We have a few more days left in Pacific Harbour before moving up to the West Coast.
