I am typing while sitting in 12E and Ken next to me (reading the WSJ) in United's BusinessFirst on our way from Honolulu non-stop to Houston. In a few minutes we will have drinks, food and video entertainment to help make the 9 hour flight go a a bit faster.
We were actually scheduled to fly home from Lihue-Honolulu-Denver-Houston, as when we booked the HNL-HOU flight was not available with miles for BusinessFirst. I was NOT looking forward to flying all night to Denver, then connecting to another flight to HOU, which arrived at 1pm CST (after leaving at 8p from Lihue). So, all week I was coveting the non-stop. I called during the week, and while they would put us on the flight there were no reward seats out of LIH. Yesterday, I decided I would pay for the LIH-HNL seats as long as we could snag the non-stop. Well of course, after I decided that the flight was no longer available. Boo. This morning, I decided to give it another shot and the nice United agent changed us to HNL-IAH. I then purchased two seats to HNL at $85 each. So, for $170 we now arrive Houston at 730am and no changing plane AND a newer plane (still not Continental style though) with our own TVs AND foot rests that kinda go up. We are living large.
After I did my celebratory dance for getting the flight, the next order of business was breakfast. Club or local? Verdict: Local. We went back to the little cafe we went to yesterday and enjoyed coffee, muffins and papayas. What struck us was how happy everyone seemed, maybe because it was the weekend or maybe because it was a cool little place with good food.
After breakfast we took a different route back to the hotel and went looking for the Spouting Horn. What we found was a a beautiful new community being built overlooking the water and a golf course. We drove around and stopped by a model home which was not open. Of course that didn't stop us from walking around the outside and looking in the windows. It was called the Baby Beach Cottage and had 2 bed/2 bath in the main house and a 1/1 in a little guest cabin. The layout was great and they seemed to be well made. Of course how much? no idea, but we both decided it would be sufficient for our simple needs (beach, golf course, mountain views, etc).
After finding our dream house, we did find the Spouting Horn and it did spout just a bit. Then back to the hotel for some gym time, packing and finally check out. We stopped past Keoki's Paradise (where we had dinner on Wednesday night) and had a light lunch and a huge desert called Hula Pie. It is one of those "we really shouldn't but what the hell we went to the gym this morning" types of food. It was an ice cream pie, with oreo crust and hot fudge topping. Yes, we shouldn't have, but we did, and enjoyed every bite.
Baby Beach Cottage update: 2.3 million. Hmmm...gotta win that lotto.
Returning the car, flight to HNL and hanging in the United Club were all non-events. Now, we are sitting back, relaxing and hoping to enjoy the fight. Except, Ken's video controls aren't working....so guess what no video for him. He is borrowing mine for the time being, but it may be a long 9 hours!
Last words for this trip. Once again, we had an amazing trip and Kauai was as beautiful as reported. The sights were spectacular, the smells were exotic, the experiences were challenging and fun, we were (for the most part) disconnected and relaxed, and lastly...I had the perfect travel companion.
Aloha
