Today we walked around the walled city of Avignon where we visited the Palais des Papes where the popes lived before moving to Rome. It is a huge stone castle that on the outside reminded me of Windsor Castle in England. The stone really keeps the building cold inside.
We also visited the 11th Century bridge, Pont des Benezet. This bridge is built over the Rhone River but no longer reaches the other side due to the floods.
The surprise favorite was our visit to the Pont du Gard. A gem hidden near Nimes. It is an old three story aqueduct bridge built by the Romans. It is so majestic looking. We had to walk a trail along a river to get to it. Walking along the river in the small mountains and rocks reminded me so much of being in Colorado--without my mountains, of course. The many arches were lit from the setting sun and it was beautiful.
I've gotten the hang of driving here. I love the roundabout system. We need to adopt it here. It saves so much time with no stop signs. France does a fairly good job on directional signs but not very good at road signage. We try to get our bearings and we can hold our own but a few more signs sure would help. My car is stick, which I learned to drive on a stick car and drove one for many, many years, but at first I was nervous about it since it's been awhile. Bit I found it's like riding a bike--you never really forget and I'm back in the saddle!
Today we are off to Arles to see the Roman arena and baths. A lot of Roman influence down here. I'm sure there will be even more on the coast.
