Our next stop was Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays. We only intended to spend two nights there, but ended up staying for 4! It is officially my favourite holiday destination to just chill out at and gets a full 10 out of 10 from me! People, go there if you can, its magical! The first day we went into the town and drove down a further 10kms to Shute Harbour (where most of the big sailing boats are kept! There is some money there - one boat we saw is reputed to cost 2 million dollars - wtf!)
The second day we spent lazing by the beautiful poolside. The day went something like this - pick a good spot by the pool....get hot in the sun...go for a well deserved swim....put sunscreen on and get hotter in the sun....go for another swim.....get hot.....go for a swim....stop for some lunch....go for a swim.....get hot.....have a massage by the poolside for $20 (bliss!).....go for a swim.....laze there until the sun goes down then go and cook a BBQ for dinner.
The following day we went out on a trip called "Reefjet". It picked us up from the campsite and 8am. We got on the jetboat and cruised out on the water until we got to Inlet Lookout. We then jumped onto the dodgiest dingy boat I have ever seen to get us to the shore. We could only go 12 people at a time, so the boat had to make 4 trips. Once on the island we took a walk up to the lookout that gives you a birdseye view of Whitehaven beach. We got an awesome panoramic shot of that (apparently the sands on that beach never look the same in two photos as they are always changing - a bit like sanddunes). Next stop on the boat was Whitehaven beach itself, and we spent an hour down there lazing in the sun abit, swimming off the beach a bit and enjoying absolute bliss. That is beach where bounty chocolate advert is filmed and is also the most photographed beach in the world! We had a some lunch while the boat moved round to Hayman Island where we put on our snorkel masks and swam out to possibly the most beautiful place on earth! Words cannot describe how amazing the coral reef is with its bright oranges, pinks and yellows and the brightly coloured fish. WOW is all I can say about that. And to top it off, Pete came with me and together we had the time of our lives out there in the water! I would do it again in a flash, and tell you know if you ever come to Aussie, you have to see the Great Barrier Reef!
The next day we spent lazing by the pool again, life on the road is very hard work!
After spending time in the Whitsundays, we took a day to drive down to Rockhampton (it was even hotter there than it was in Cairns). Queensland weather seems to be hot or hotter, nothing much inbetween! We stayed there for 1 night and then moved onto the Town of 1770. That is the "birthplace" of Australia and where Captain Cook landed in 1770 (hence the name). We had an absolute beachfront campsite which was amazing! We were even treated to some electrical storms during the night. The night before they had even worse storms which ripped through a lot of the caravans there. We were lucky, but people with big tents and fancy caravans with pop out bits weren't so lucky! Anyway, decided not to stay another night to find out if it would happen again! Besides that I was being feasted on by several types of bitting things now! Pete, on the other hand, has decided to do some medical research on how to stop things bitting you. He is drinking cheap cask wine (cheapest was $9 for 8 litres!) that tastes like gone-off sherry and seems to think that dosing himself in the stuff stops the mozzies biting. Maybe I'll join him on the medical experiment!
Yesterday we arrived in Bundaberg (famous for the bundaberg rum and bundaberg gingerbeer). Today we are off the explore that and do more research into the the effects of drinking rum vs mozzie wanting to bite you or not! Will let you know the outcome of that one!
A few other interesting things you might like to know: - We have bought a small tent to sleep in while we are away (the tent is called Murray!) Yay for dad!!!
We are fascinated by all the "big things" Australia has and have so far found the big Admiral, swordfish, baramundi, bull, cow, crab and mango! We are taking picture of all of the big things for you to see!
Probably wont get time to put photos on today, but will do asap cause we have some really cool ones!!!!
