We left Donkey Valley about a week later than planned as we were having so much fun, which meant we only had 3 days to dash down to Cape Town to meet Ralph's Dad, Graham, and partner Liz for their 2 week holiday in South Africa.
The highlight on the way to Cape Town was the arid Karoo National Park which we drove ourselves around spotting zebra, ostrich and antelope. The guided walk with our armed escort was fun; luckily we didn't encounter any lions along the way!!!
Graham & Liz arrived safely and checked into their swanky hotel. We pitched our tent at the nearby backpackers with 7 others in a tiny, sandy and windswept garden. At least our fly sheet stayed on during the night which is more than can be said for some of our neighbours!
After a few days exploring the wonderful Cape peninsula and the city we headed to Stellenbosch for some serious wine tasting. We went to lots of excellent vineyards and filled our boots and our car with wine J
We worked our way along the inland route 62, stopping off in amongst other places, Calitzdorp. Graham and Liz were as usual staying at a lovely guest house, we were planning to go to the local backpackers to camp but the rather pickled and very friendly owner allowed us to camp in the courtyard of Graham & Liz's lodge. We had a great evening getting to know the locals in his bar then had a fab braii back at the lodge.
As well as seeing the ostrich in Outshoorn we went on an early morning Meerkat experience. It was magical watching them at close quarters come out of their burrow, cleaning up and wrestling with each other before heading off for the day to forage.
Our travels with Graham & Liz were capped off with 4 wonderful and relaxing days in Knysna, this time we also got to stay in the swanky hotel (Thanks Dad!!).
So now we're back on our own again and working our way gradually northward to return to Donkey Valley at the beginning of Feb.
